Full steam ahead for Easter self-catering cottage visitors to Swansea and West Wales

7th March 2010

Steam railways throughout Wales will be open and running trains for visitors staying in Wales Holidays self-catering cottages and farmhouses during the Easter Holidays – and some will be operational earlier in March.
For Wales Holidays visitors to Swansea and West Wales, the Gwili Railway near Carmarthen will be running trains on 14 March, from 2 to 5 April and also on the 10th, 18th and 27th; these leave from Bronwydd Arms station.
The Gwili Steam Railway is a standard gauge railway; the first train ran at Easter 1978 using one coach pulled by a little engine called Merlin. Since then it has developed into one of the principle tourist attractions in Carmarthenshire.

The Gwili Railway is a living reminder of a Great Western Railway branch line set in the breathtaking Carmarthenshire hills. The trip down memory lane starts at Bronwydd Arms Station, and the steam train follows the route, originally taken by the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth line to a delightful halt at Danycoed
There are exciting times ahead as plans are in place to extend the Gwili Railway to the outskirts of Carmarthen – to a new terminus at the old Abergwili Junction. This was the point where the line to Llandeilo turned right and headed up the Towy valley.
